My work draws from the traditions of calligraphy, graphic design and mixed media. Using paint, collage, found texts as well as created texts and lettering, I explore the relationship between text and image. My process includes adding and subtracting elements to construct compositions that leave partially visible, rough and imperfect traces. I often use recycled windows, doors, and other items as frames which become an integral part of the piece.
I assemble poems, newspapers, advertising, and photographs that I peel away then paint and collage over again and again to explore the interior and exterior landscapes of everyday life. These pieces of social and personal narrative are both provocative and evocative. Using these fragments, I strive to find harmony in the complex bits and pieces of a 21st century life. Inspired by Robert Rauschenberg, Raymond Saunders, and Mark Bradford, I create metaphorical walls of my own graffiti.
